Sherman Alexie

The narrator feels discriminated against because of the color of his skin. He feels the cop pulled him over because of his color and that the store clerk thought he was suspicious because of his ethnicity. He does feel out of place sometimes because of this. I believe he has reason to feel this way because the officer was obviously being racist with his comment. The author is obviously trying to get this point across because he calls the characters in the story either white or indian.

We might have different definitions of discrimination because the man in the poem wasn't discriminated by anybody. He got the same rights as anybody else. But the fact the cops stopped him is because he just looked strange and new in the neighborhood. They don't treat him unfairly it's just his appearance that causes problems. I wouldn't call that treatment discrimination.

I feel the same way you do about the discrimination in the story. I feel that the cop was being discriminate towards him. Even though he may have the same rights it seems as though he was subject to "racial profiling" and that is why he was stopped.
